Internship Opportunity at Washtenaw Community Health Organization

Internship Opportunity
Washtenaw Community Health Organization
Information Management

An intern with the Information Management staff at the Washtenaw Community Health Organization (WCHO) will work as a member of a team to support the development and implementation of a web-based healthcare management information system. The system, called Encompass, is used mostly by mental health and health providers in five Michigan counties: Monroe, Lenawee, Livingston, Washtenaw, and Saginaw. The system is relatively new, developed over the last four years. For Encompass to be viable over the long term there needs to be increased direct value to the end users.

The current primary intern project is to help make data more accessible to end users. We need someone to help us create a user-friendly interface to the system that would allow end users to develop ad-hoc reports. This would involve researching options, making recommendations, and perhaps development and implementation. Knowledge of the following would be ideal:
SQL and database design
Report-creation systems
Information design and visualization
Java or another programming language

Two other projects we need help with which are lower priority include: determining a process to make training videos available online, and improving information system security by aligning user group access with recommendations from administration.

Students can work 10-20 hours per week.

As an intern at the WCHO, a student will attend meetings, consult with staff in other county departments, and communicate with an information system vendor. A student will gain knowledge of current trends in computerization of mental health and health records, the information system development life cycle, reporting, and county mental health and health organizations. At minimum the student will meet with a supervisor biweekly, and will be provided with a final summary and evaluation.

To apply send a resume to Jackie Sproat, 734.544.6721, sproatj@ewashtenaw.org
